Recreational Therapy Student
University of Utah
I’m a passionate Recreational Therapy student at the University of Utah with a mission to make recreational opportunities accessible for all, especially individuals with disabilities. Through my academic studies and hands-on work with community organizations, both on and off campus, I am dedicated to fostering inclusivity and expanding access to recreational activities for people with disabilities. My goal is simple yet powerful: to create a world where everyone—regardless of ability—can enjoy the same recreational experiences alongside their able-bodied peers.
As a wheelchair user and service dog handler with multiple complex disabilities, I have a unique, lived perspective on the challenges faced by those in the disability community. This personal experience allows me to connect on a deeper level with the individuals I work with, offering insight and understanding that goes beyond textbook knowledge. I understand the frustrations and joys that come with navigating the world with a disability, and I use this understanding to shape creative, meaningful solutions in therapeutic recreation.
I am incredibly fortunate to have a supportive partner in my husband, who works in accessible technology. Together, we aim to combine our respective fields of expertise to push the boundaries of accessibility within recreation. We believe that through technology and innovation, we can create even more opportunities for people with disabilities to participate, explore, and thrive in recreational activities that were once out of reach. Whether it's adaptive sports, accessible travel experiences, or creating sensory-friendly environments, we are committed to making recreational spaces more inclusive and empowering for everyone.
Outside of my studies and advocacy work, I am an avid traveler. Exploring new places and cultures has been an important part of my personal growth and development, and it has also shaped my approach to recreational inclusion. Traveling has taught me practical skills in problem-solving, patience, and adaptability—skills that I carry with me in my work. It has also helped me grow and improve as a disabled individual, including improving the ability to handle stimulating environments, speaking with people around me individually, and handling being in busy environments. One of my favorite destinations is the Disney resorts, where I’ve had the chance to experience firsthand how well-designed spaces can create an environment where everyone, regardless of ability, can have fun and feel welcome.
Ultimately, my goal is to bridge the gap between the disability community and the world of recreational opportunities. Whether I’m working with local organizations, advocating for policy change, or collaborating with my husband on innovative projects, I am deeply committed to helping create a world where recreation is not only accessible but truly inclusive. I’m excited to continue learning, growing, and contributing to a future where people of all abilities can share in the joy of recreation together.
